Jon Weber with Connie Evingson

June 21 @ 9:00 pm - 10:30 pm

Jon Weber, a true original, is rapidly emerging as a youthful, singular personality in jazz. Weber is best known as the worthy successor to the late Marian McPartland on the NPR staple “Piano Jazz.” He’s at once an exceptional musician as well as a gifted historian and storyteller, and, above all, a true piano polymath. Playing and talking, Mr. Weber takes us through a century of history, making it crystal clear what Fats Waller, Teddy Wilson, Bud Powell, Nat King Cole, Erroll Garner, Dave Brubeck, Oscar Peterson and the other figures on jazz piano’s Mount Rushmore.

It’s a wonderful thing when jazz insiders from all over the world enthusiastically discover an intelligent, creative young talent like Jon Weber. A spectacular solo pianist, his brilliantly crafted spontaneous orchestrations easily place him in the rarefied company of today’s elite jazz musicians.

“The tunes are mind-bendingly complex with overlapping time signatures, accent shifts, and rhythmic feels that swerve from Cuban montunos to Indian tabla patterns to straight-ahead jazz at the blink of an eye. Weber spiked his challenging charts with infectious latin grooves while fellow musicians rode the odd-metered passages with unflappable poise.” – The Age – Melbourne, AU.

“Jon Weber is a virtuoso pianist with outstanding technique plus boundless imagination and enthusiasm who is bound to make a big impression on the international jazz scene.” – UK’s Jazz Journal International

“He’s at once an exceptional musician as well as a gifted historian and storyteller, and, above all, a true piano polymath.” – Wall Street journal

“Jon Weber is a virtuoso – pure and simple.” – All About Jazz

Jazz vocalist Connie Evingson is known for taking divergent musical paths. Her recorded catalog of acclaimed CD’s ranging from jazz and Broadway standards to the music of Peggy Lee, the Beatles, Django Reinhardt, Dave Frishberg, Norman Gimbel and more reflects an adventurous spirit that knows no boundaries.

Whether singing bebop, bossa nova, big band swing or a ballad, Connie’s voice is readily identifiable - sure in pitch, a tad smoky in places, razor sharp in articulation and exhibiting an inherent sense of swing that’s dead-center in the pocket. Nominated as JazzWeek Vocalist of the Year in 2005 alongside Stacey Kent, Madeleine Peyroux, Tierney Sutton and Curtis Stigers, Connie has been featured on the Smithsonian’s Jazz Singers radio series, NPR’s Fresh Air and Weekend Edition, and is included on numerous compilations in the U.S., China and Japan. She is a two-time recipient of both the McKnight Fellowship for Performing Musicians and the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist’s Initiative Grant.

Cafe Accordion Orchestra

June 25 @ 7:00 pm

“Berets and Bongos” describes the Café Accordion experience. A loungy, eclectic mix, full of French flare, Latin heat and Bohemian attitude. The heart of the Café Accordion repertoire is the romantic, gypsy-influenced valse-musette. The group complements the musettes with swing, ballads, tangos, cha chas, rumbas, and cumbias to create a wonderfully varied show. They inject their music with good humor and expressive abandon. Their high level of musicianship and passion for performance makes them an entertaining concert act as well as a great dance band.

CAO is led by Dan Newton on accordion and vocals, with Eric Mohring on mandolin, violin and vocals, Erik Lillestol on bass and vocals, Robert Bell on guitar and vocals, and Joe Steinger on percussion. CAO has been delighting audiences and dancers alike since 1995. They have appeared in New York at the Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing series, the International Akkordeon Festival in Vienna, Austria, the Minnesota State Fair, as well as festivals, theaters and dance halls across the United States.
